Hyperpigmentation
Undesired changes in skin pigmentation are a major concern to many women and men. Some of the pigment changes in the skin are genetic in nature and some are hormonal like melasma (mask of pregnancy).
Dark spots on the face or neck arise from a disorder of specialized skin
cells responsible for a production of skin pigment. These skin cells
are called melanocytes. Hormonal stimulation from taking an oral birth
control, sun exposure, or taking some prescribed or over-the-counter
drugs that cause photosensitivity (like tetracycline antibiotic used to
treat acne), are responsible for formation of darker skin spots,
generally described as hyperpigmentation.
Treatment of skin hyperpigmentation must be accessed individually.
Chemical Peels and Microdermabrasion can significantly reduce dark skin
patches and melasma. Further reduction of hyperpigmenation can be
brought by a clever chemical peel called Cosmelan that shuts off
melanocytes and literally prevent skin darkening for extended period of
time. Cosmelan is available in the MD Spa and Laser Clinic and its
application includes performing a Cosmelan peel by a Skin Care Therapist
in the clinic and several months of using a Cosmelan cream by the
client at home.
For select clients, hyperpigmentation of the skin can be reduced by
IPL Photofacials and Profile ProFractional Sciton Laser. Follow on care
at home is required by every client and includes avoiding sun exposure
and the effective application of sunscreens. Skin Care Programs with
various lightening agents ranging from a cucumber extract to Serum or
creams with Vitamin C to creams with hydroquinone, are very important
components of a treatment plan for hyperpigmentation. Maintenance
treatments may be needed from time to time.
