Laser Resurfacing Treatments
Md Spa and Laser Clinic uses a state-of-the-art ProFractional laser technology for gentle effective skin resurfacing with little downtime.
Laser resurfacing is extremely important major rejuvenation procedure. It is an effective and economical way to restore the younger appearance and fresh look to the aged skin. The most desired benefits of laser skin resurfacing are the removal (or significant reduction) of wrinkles, erasing skin blemishes, sun damage, age and sun spots and restoring a healthy texture of the skin. Many people elect to go for laser resurfacing to remove (or at least make much less noticeable) scars, from both acne and surgery, and also to reduce stretch marks.

There are two types of lasers used for skin rejuvenation: ablative and non-ablative.
The ablative lasers (carbon dioxide – CO2 and more modern, erbium) are very powerful and they vaporize the outermost layer of the skin up to 0.1 mm or 100 microns (less than a thin single page of paper!). The treatments result in a prolonged heeling, a need for changing special dressings and an overall downtime of several weeks duration! All of this led to the ablative lasers earning a reputation as ‘the lasers that first burn skin to make it looking better after a very long period of healing’
Even the more modern erbium lasers (with much better control of the depth of the skin vaporization and control of skin bleeding by coagulation) have very significant downtime. The advent of ‘micro laser peels’, finally helped the erbium lasers to gain a bit more popularity. With the intention of performing a full thickness skin resurfacing (100 microns), a series of micro laser peels can be performed every several weeks. This approach ultimately shortens downtime to 1-2 weeks after each micro laser peel.
The non-ablative laser systems deliver energy to the skin without causing skin vaporization, and by heating up the skin deliver the desired cosmetic effect like removal of sun damage or reduction of melasma. However, the non-ablative lasers lack the ‘power’ of the ablative lasers and require several treatment sessions to make a significant improvement.
Fraxel Laser is a hybrid laser that combines the effectiveness of ablative lasers with a gentle touch of the non-ablative laser systems. Fraxel laser can be compared to a laser that emits a laser beam in the form of a minute shower of laser light, working very deep but leaving untouched space in between. As a result, the skin is left intact on the surface and the benefits of the Fraxel Laser reach very deep into the skin. This can be compared to ‘core aerating’ of the lawn!
Fraxel Laser is FDA and Health Canada approved for reduction or elimination of wrinkles around eyes, acne scars and surgical scars and skin conditions requiring coagulation of tissue. Results are fantastic with minimal downtime. The main side effect is skin bronzing that lasts for a few days but does not prevent people from continuing their daily activities!
