PhotoDynamic Therapy Treatments

PhotoDynamic Therapy with Levulan is novel and effective solution to rejuvenate skin very economically, remove pre-cancerous lesions (like actinic keratosis) or to combat acne. In up to 3 sessions of deep skin exfoliation, you will see amazing effects of this new anti-aging technology that gains more and more respect among young and mature people in North America.

The core of the treatment is based on special properties of Levulan (a prescribed drug) which is a colorless liquid with 20% aminolevulenic acid. Upon applying it over the skin surface, Levulan is slowly absorbed by the outermost layer of the skin, and then activated by special light (of blue color) and wave length of 419-420 nm. The light is emitted by a special lamp called BLU-U. When BLU-U emits its light, a photosensitivity reaction in skin with absorbed Levulan starts. In effect, a strong exfoliation of the skin is accomplished and the treated skin is rejuvenated.

Frequently Asked Questions About PhotoDynamic Therapy

What is PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT)?

PhotoDynamic Therapy is accomplished by utilizing a photosensitivity of skin after it has absorbed 20% aminolevulenic acid (drug name – Levulan Kerastic) and has been briefly exposed to a light emanated by a BLU-U lamp. Skin exfoliates in 1-3 days and the old outermost layer is removed by peeling off.

What are the Indications for PDT?

Treatment of acne, acne scars, removal of sun damage, treatment of pre-cancerous lesions like AK (actinic keratosis) or skin rejuvenation. Also, permanent reduction of white and pale hair.

How many sessions are needed?

Usually, 3 sessions are required for full benefits. Sessions are in 4-8 week apart.

Is PhotoDynamic Therapy painful?

There is no pain during a treatment session with PhotoDynamic Therapy in the clinic. However, some people report that there is some skin discomfort during skin peeling arising from skin being tight and tender. This discomfort can be greatly reduced by taking Tylenol and/or applying cold, wet compresses to the affected area.

Are any side effects?

Skin becomes photosensitive and pink to red for a couple of days. One absolutely MUST stay indoors for 24 hours after the treatment so the photosensitivity will cease. Skin will peel off and you need to take appropriate care during exfoliation. Our Skin Care Therapist will guide you in this process.

How will I know if I will benefit from PDT?

During your consultation, our Skin Care Therapist or Cosmetic Physician will assess your skin condition and inform you if PhotoDynamic Therapy will help your skin.
